I served aboard Askari from Oct 66 to Oct 67 as Electronics CPO. Of my 20 years, my most memorable ship. It's too bad I only just found this web page.

Correcting email address on earlier entry: Was an RM1 ON BOARD FROM 11-05-68 TO 10-31-69. Anyone remember the ride from Nam to Sasebo Japan? Didn't the hull crack below the expansion joints? Nice ride. I believe we lost the Radar, loran and it was overcast for three days. Can anyone confirm my memory? Hey, I would love to

Tonight, I found this website. After all these years, and I cried. I served aboard the USS Askari as an SK-2 from about November of 1965 until discharge in June of 1967. Probably some of the best time of my life. Wish I had stayed in, but at that time I was having problems with our dept. chief so I bailed out when I could. Since discharge I've been married 3 times, have one child and grandchild and am now in the waning years as I approach 60 years of age. My body has not held up as well as I wish it would have but I've had a good life. I know that 60 is not old, but every day is a struggle. I want everyone to know that I am proud I served time in the Navy and was proud of the mission our ship, the Askari, served for the war effort. We were called, we were ready and we performed as needed. We should be proud of our service. Since discharge on '67 I've been kinda distant from other 'namvets because as a storekeeper I never really experienced danger, I didn't have to be brave, never had to fight the enemy, never missed a meal or didn't have a clean bed every night, I just did my job. Yes, I'm a veteran, but not like the ground troops who went through hell. I have nothing to compare to them, and I'm a little guilty about it. Have had many times of not feeling worthy, but have somehow made it this far. I guess we have to look at our service in the light that we were a spoke in the overall wheel that made things happen. Anyway, thanks for having this website. If anyone wants to communicate please email. Best wishes to all, Randy Clouse
