I served on board the Askari in the Repair Division as a EM3 from 67 to 68. I have been in Alaska since 72 and every now and then my mind returns to that year in Viet Nam. Thanks for keeping the history of the Askari alive.

My name is Mark Normington. My father James E. Normington served on the Askari during the Korean War. During that time his brother was also stationed aboard. Interestingly enough there were 3 sets of brothers serving aboard at the same time. The reason I am contacting you is my father died when I was 12. I heard a few stories from him but, the Askari has always had a special place in my heart. Maybe you could find someone who knew my Dad and have them contact me. I My father was also stationed aboard the ARL 24 Uss Sphinx. I know my brother saw the Askari when he was in vietnam. My brother was on LST1032 Monmouth County. I would also be interested in purchasing a picture of my Dads old ship. Thank you in advance for any help you may be able to provide me. I do know he was aboard during the evacuation from Hungnam. Respectfully, Mark E. Normington

I served on the Askari from 9/66 till 1/68 working in the engine room on the way to Viet Nam but when they started giving rates away I became a Boilerman 3rd to get up on the main deck. My transfer sent me to Saigon during Tet 68 and I ended up on the roof of a hotel with the orders "if it moves shoot it"

I haven't heard form any of the old crew since I left the service. I am currently working as a Firefighter for Los Angeles County Fire Department
