Found one shipmate that I recall...Fred Hungerford. I served as Yeoman 3rd in ship's office in 1952 thru 1953. Most of that service was when ARL-30 was based in Yokosuka, Japan...with occasional forays out for sea pay and I&I. We had a great crew at that time … many of us discharged just prior to Christmas 1953 at the San Diego destroyer base. I have many great memories of friends and experiences during those days. If anyone remembers me, I'd love to hear from them. My best wishes to you all …..

I was in the Army Riverine Force in the Mekong Delta in '67 & '68. My LCM 8 was damaged and a yard Derrick lifted it onto a barge which was alongside the USS Askari for refitting. I was assigned a hammock and lived on the Askari for about a month during repairs. I had no duties. I wasn't listed on the station bill. During frequent mortar attacks the Askari would sound General Quarters and get underway. Having no place to go I stayed in my hammock. A Boatswain Mate told me once, "Sergeant, just get up and move. Go from bow to stern and back but please, just move."

As you can tell by the name I am the son of Jerry Howard Sr. He served aboard this fine ship during Viet Nam (67-68) and he passed away Apr of 2016. A very decent and good man with a hell of a right cross which seems to come standard with sailors. trust me, as a Marine I know this. If any of you shipmates knew Jerry Sr., I would like to know more about his times aboard ship and at port. He must have been fun guy to be around. Naturally I heard a few stories but I would like to connect with someone that actually knew dad. Perhaps might even have a few pictures that I can look at. He is greatly missed.

The V.A. is requesting I verify my service on board. I served from August 1967 until February 1969. I was a boatswain mate and drove the LCVP. I was on the Army base at Don Tam numerous times and many other places on land. I am looking for help in providing the information to the V.A. proving this. Any help would be appreciated.

I was part of the recommissioning crew and onboard when we took Askari to Vietnam. I was the Engineering Log room Yeoman for most of my time onboard (1966-December 1967). Would very much like to hear from any of the crew that was with me during this time.

Very glad to see this web site is still up and running! It was created by my dad, Tom Willoughby, over 20 years ago. Keep in mind it was all trial and error back then. Pretty good for a guy born in 1930.
I've been sharing this site with my teen age kids and they have been reading the guestbook comments and learning quite a bit from real people. Please keep posting your thoughts and memories so your descendents learn too! As my dad has proven - you're never too old to learn.

12/66 to 12/67, assigned to deck division, transferred to Operations the spring of 67, passed the SM3 exam in June or July, while aboard. Was part of the deck crew that painted the beast green. Still remember a few names, even tho it's been over 50 years. Went to NWS Yorktown briefly, then NAS Norfolk to finish my 3 year minority enlistment.
