The "Art of War" on the History Channel. Rent it, buy it, steal it but watch it! Its so poignant in regards to "Operation Giant Slingshot"

Made comments about a year ago on this guest book. Since then have had contact with 2 shipmates from USS Askari ARL30; Dave Osinski & Jim Clark. It was great to hear from them. Hope to visit them someday in the Pacific NW Washington. Askari & Vietnam has stayed with me all these years(served 1969-70). Another couple of guys I'd enjoy contacting are Sam Sorbello(sp)BM2 was from Half Moon Bay CA & Andy Lehotay(sp)SK3 was from FT. Lauderdale FL. Other great guys from the Askari are also in my mind at times. As we get older we seem to want to reach out to folks we knew during difficult/good times. God Bless all you guys who served & thanks!

I was a member of the original Army detachment (9th Div.) stationed on board the Askari. Boarded around May 67 and rotated out in March 68. You swabbies managed to bag my last set of fatigues from the laundry when I had only a couple of weeks left in country, so I had to jump into our Boston Whaler and go see my buddy in 9th S&T for a few replacement sets. Also, I actually ran into one of the navy crew members I knew in Naples, Italy, months later when on leave from Germany.

Hi, I just found out that my daddy Leonard R. Knipfer was station onboard 4/26/50 according to his DD214. He was a Damage Controlman Third Class. If anyone knew him can you please contact me. I would like to know more about him. He never said much about the war except he was stationed on the island of New Caledonia. He died March 29, 1999 in Iowa City VA Hospital. I myself am retired from the Navy as a Boatswain Mate First Class. Both of my daughters are serving. 1 in the Navy and 1 in the Air Force. Thank you in advance. Randy Knipfer
