I was on the Askari for about a year, I went on a reinlistment leave for 30 days in 1946 and when I came back they transfered me to the Askari till there was a spot for me, I was a Yeoman, I worked with a fellow named John Churchill Y1c. That was about 1946

I served with the 9th Division LRP/Ranger in Vietnam '68 & '69. We ran missions off the Askari on the PBR boats. Sometimes we used the Heilo pad. We were pulled off the ships in Jan. '69 due to to many casualties off Toi san Island and Crossroads.

I did like coming back off missions and getting a hot shower and great food, plus a movie.

Thanks for your Hospitality.

SGT. Cody

My father ( LCDR Wm. Ertl MC )served aboard the Askari 54-55 and was part of the Tachen Islands evacuation as a medical Officer. Nice to see the helm is still being manned; he loved the Navy and we sent him on his last cruise in his Dress Blue's August 1982; I just found his service record, and orders.
